Why Am I So Tired All the Time? 8 Things to Look At After 40

If you regularly find yourself asking, “Why am I tired all the time?”, you’re certainly not alone. Low energy after 40 is something I hear about frequently, particularly from busy people juggling work, family and everything else life throws at them.

But feeling tired all the time shouldn’t simply be accepted as part of getting older.

There are many possible causes of fatigue, and often it isn’t one single issue. Instead, several small factors can gradually chip away at your energy. Here are eight areas worth looking at.

1. Sleep quality

Getting seven or eight hours in bed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting restorative sleep. Frequent waking, irregular sleep times, stress and poor sleep habits can all leave you feeling drained the following day.

Rather than focusing only on how long you sleep, consider how refreshed you actually feel when you wake up.

2. Stress and mental load

Work deadlines, parenting, finances, caring responsibilities and the constant mental to-do list all require energy.

When stress becomes your normal, it can be easy to overlook just how exhausting it is. Creating small opportunities to switch off, slow down and recover can make a meaningful difference.

3. Physical activity

It might sound counterintuitive, but moving more can help you feel more energised. Regular physical activity supports fitness, strength, sleep and overall wellbeing.

You don’t need to suddenly start training five days a week. A daily walk is a perfectly good place to begin.

4. Nutrition and hydration

If you’re wondering how to increase energy naturally, take a look at what you’re eating and drinking.

Irregular meals, highly processed foods or simply not drinking enough fluid can contribute to energy dips. Aim for balanced meals containing protein, fibre-rich carbohydrates, vegetables or fruit, and healthy fats, alongside regular hydration.

5. Alcohol

Alcohol can sometimes feel relaxing at the end of a busy day, but it can interfere with sleep quality and leave you feeling sluggish the next morning.

Consider not only how much you drink, but whether alcohol could be affecting your sleep, mood and energy.

6. Loss of fitness

We naturally need to work a little harder to maintain muscle, strength and cardiovascular fitness as we get older. If life has become increasingly sedentary, everyday activities can start requiring more effort.

The good news is that fitness can be rebuilt. Start where you are and progress gradually.

7. Mood and motivation

Low mood, stress and lack of motivation can all affect how energetic we feel. Equally, constantly feeling exhausted can affect our mood. Paying attention to your mental wellbeing is just as important as looking at food and exercise.

8. Know when to speak to your GP

Persistent fatigue shouldn’t automatically be put down to age or a busy lifestyle.

If you’re experiencing tiredness all the time after 40, particularly if it’s persistent, unexplained, getting worse or accompanied by other symptoms, speak to your GP. Fatigue can sometimes be associated with medical conditions or medications, so it’s important to get appropriate healthcare advice rather than trying to solve everything through lifestyle changes alone.

Energy is about more than today

For me, improving energy isn’t simply about getting through another busy day. It’s part of protecting your healthspan — your ability to move, exercise, work, socialise and enjoy life as the years go by.

You don’t need to change everything at once. In fact, trying to do that is often what stops change from lasting.

Instead, ask yourself one simple question:

What’s the one factor affecting my energy that I could realistically change this week?

Start there. Small, sustainable changes, repeated consistently, can become the foundation for better energy and long
